One of the largest school districts in San Diego County, San Marcos Unified School District (SMUSD) has 20 different schools throughout northern San Diego County, providing education for over 20,000 students. San Marcos Unified School district serves the communities of San Marcos as well as portions of Carlsbad, Escondido, Vista, and some unincorporated areas of San Diego County. In addition to having award-winning schools, San Marcos Unified School District has an academic partnership with California State University San Marcos (CSUSM) called the PACE promise, which is aimed at preparing students for college at an early stage, providing them with the opportunities to attend college, and guaranteeing SMUSD students admission to California State University San Marcos.

Situated just off San Elijo Road in San Elijo Hills, Double Peak School is a K-8 school that in early 2016 and offers a curriculum that emphasizes arts and sciences.
Located in the community of San Elijo Hills, San Elijo Elementary School opened in 2006 and has an enrollment of about 1500 students.
Situated right next to San Elijo Elementary School, San Elijo Middle School is an award-winning middle school that consistently ranks among the highest scoring in the state.
The flagship school of the district, San Marcos High School serves over 2500 students and works in partnership with Cal State San Marcos and Palomar College to provide a secondary education that will help prepare students for life after high school.
A public two-year community college in northern San Marcos, Palomar College has an enrollment of roughly 30,000 full and part-time students. California students can enroll in courses for $46 a unit.
CSU San Marcos enrolls approximately 9,000 students and offers 44 programs for undergraduate students, 10 for graduate students, a Doctorate in Education, as well as a nursing school.
