Preparing Yourself for the End of Daylight Saving Time

As we approach the end of yet another daylight saving time, it is important to know the reasons behind why we set our clocks back in the first place. This year, DST started on March 10, 2019 and ends on November 3, 2019 at 2:00AM. Clocks will fall back to 1:00AM, providing an additional hour of sleep. Learn about the history of DST as well as helpful tips to prepare yourself for the change.

History of Daylight Saving Time

Daylight saving time was adopted in the United States in 1918. Where did this concept of changing back clocks come from and more importantly, why? There are many myths and misconceptions about who implemented DST first. Many believed it to be Benjamin Franklin in 1784. Franklin wrote a satirical essay in the Journal de Paris titled “An Economical Project”. In the essay, he recounts a time where he was woken up by a noise at 6am. To his surprise, he saw that the sun had risen. In short, Franklin believed the citizens of Paris should wake up with the sun to save money on candles. Some say we have George Hudson and William Willet to thank for daylight saving time. Hudson wanted a shift in the time so that he could utilize the sun longer for bug hunting. Willet presented the idea as a way to better use daylight, however the concept wouldn’t see the light of day while he was living. Many countries who fought in World War I wanted to conserve energy so they implemented daylight saving time. While some believed this would benefit farmers, farmers were very much against it, as they had lost an hour of sunlight in the morning.

Observing Daylight Saving Time

Who observes daylight saving time? It is estimated that less than 40% of countries follow daylight saving time. In the United States, Hawaii does observe DST. Most of Arizona chooses not to observe DST due to the intense heat the sun brings.
